This installation explores the research and design proposals in Studio Twenty Seven Architecture's recent publication Southwest: (A)Mending L'Enfant's Plan. The Studio delves into Southwest's history as a site of urban experimentation and projects a vision of its future. Redevelopment of Southwest requires thoughtful consideration of forces of change that are just becoming apparent. Our research and exploration is a process intended to encourage all stakeholders in Southwest and the District to reconsider old grand plans and question the many different visions for the future. Our propositions are not discrete objects, like the city itself they will continue to change, update, and re-frame.

Changing demographics in the Washington, DC metro area mean changing paradigms for multi-unit housing. This study model explores how individual two story housing units can be arranged on a site to create shared common areas of various degrees of privacy. While the efficiencies of this approach have been well known since Le Corbusier's Unite' d'Habitation was built in the 1940s, this design can also help strengthen a sense of community. The shared common areas provide additional opportunities for residents to meet and interact with their neighbors. In October, construction started on the La Casa Supportive Housing building in Columbia Heights. This past week evacuation for the basement was completed and there is now nowhere to go but up! This morning, the formwork for the tower crane pad was erected and readied for tomorrow's pour. The adjacent buildings have been underpinned and stabilized. The scaffolding over the entrance to the adjacent building will protect pedestrians during La Casa's construction. Activities will move quickly now as the concrete contractor mobilizes and begins work. Studio Twenty Seven Architecture was awarded the renovation and expansion of the first KIPP DC Campus in Northeast DC, which will be located in Ward 5. KIPP DC plans to open this new school at the site in 2013, beginning with a pre-kindergarten and kindergarten program. The new facility is being planned to serve more than 1,000 students through 8th grade.

We're a little tardy with this news, but better late than never! In late October Mayor Vincent Gray and representatives from Studio Twenty Seven Architecture, along with joint venture partner Leo A Daly, celebrated the ground breaking for the District of Columbia's Homeless Services Program's prototype for Permanent Supportive Housing. Located on the revitalized 14th Street Corridor, this new structure will provide housing for 40 men in a facility designed to attain USGBC LEED Gold Certification. DGS Director Brian J. Hanlon observed that "the new, vibrant and engaging La Casa will change the perception of homeless care facilities...in the District."
