McMillan Reservoir is a District of Columbia historic landmark located along North Capitol Street. Built in 1902, the reservoir and accompanying treatment plant improved the quality of drinking water attained by the city from the Potomac River. By the latter half of the twentieth century the reservoir and its technology had grown obsolete and were abandoned for a newer facility in the northwest section of the city.
The McMillan site has deteriorated over the last thirty years, and the District of Columbia has begun to consider proposals for redeveloping the property. Studio Twenty Seven Architecture is preparing a proposal that renews the reservoir property as a community park-based neighborhood. Retail components respond to the street grid while housing blocks float above the park and preserve historic remnants of the reservoir facility.
