Studio Twenty Seven Architecture was asked to renovate the upper room of a row house along one of Washington DC's typical residential streets. The design aspiration for this space was to express small rituals of daily life as spectacle. The program called for a master bedroom suite including a bed area, closet, reading nook and bathroom within the 650 square foot floor plan. The ritual activities of everyday day life are celebrated on platforms, through material qualities, and within the contours of the folds of the materials. In this newly defined private universe, dressing and showering become active events, casting silhouettes against translucently lit boxes. Conversely, the passive activities of sleeping, reading, and bathing occur calmly on plinths, finishing the rich dialogue.
