January in Trinidad: KIPP Rises in Northeast

Process—————15 January 2014

A cold, snowy January has not hindered construction of KIPP DC’s Webb Campus in the Washington, DC neighborhood known as Trinidad. The Webb Campus is built to facilitate KIPP’s mission: providing accessible, advancement-driven education to kids growing up in the most economically challenged wards of the District. Perched at the intersection of Mt. Olivet Road and Holbrook Street NE, the new school will serve as a lantern to the community, providing communal gathering and recreational space in an area hemmed in by infrastructural and industrial sites, not to mention the cemetery across the street.

Currently, steel framing is being erected for the middle school phase of the project; this will include classrooms, a cafeteria, and a gymnasium. KIPP DC Northeast Academy opens in July 2014. It will be KIPP’s fourth middle school. Northeast Academy will serve fifth and sixth grade students in July 2014 and will grow one grade each summer thereafter, serving grades 5-8 by 2017. Also located at Webb Campus will be the KIPP Connect Academy for early childhood education, as well as the Spring Academy Elementary School.

The campus is designed to achieve USGBC LEED for Schools Silver Certification; it features high recycled content steel framing and Energy Star Roof systems.
