Repurpose > Replace

Process—————29 September 2014

Gallaudet University has commissioned Studio Twenty Seven Architecture to convert the mid-century modern student dormitory Peet Hall into offices for the Gallaudet Interpreting Services (GIS). While Gallaudet pushes forward with a long-term expansion plan, the University also seeks to renew and repurpose its existing buildings where possible. This approach is driven by a desire for sustainability and economy, but it also allows the school to keep buildings that have contributed to the character of the campus. Campus Architect Hansel Bauman sees the value in repurposing Peet Hall, instead of replacing it. “The bones are good – and it is a wonderful example of mid-century modernism.” As with most collegiate residential halls of this era, the structure is stable, the exterior envelope needs new windows and flashing here and there, and the mechanical system is antiquated and needs replacing – but the fundamental qualities of the building remain intact. The design reprograms the original dwelling units to create a new live/work building, updating each space according to DeafSpace principles.
