ABC’s of Craftsmanship

Awards—————10 November 2014

Two of Studio Twenty Seven Architecture’s recent projects were presented with awards from Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC). Easter Seals of DC|MD|VA Child Development Center and Union Station Pavilions both received awards for excellence in craftsmanship.

The mission of ABC is “To protect and enhance the merit shop philosophy within the construction industry…” Since the Renaissance, tradespeople, architects, and engineers have blended their visions, wonder, and skills to achieve beauty in built works. These two projects involve deep collaboration between trades to share knowledge of materials, tools, and methods.

The Easter Seals Child Development Center was praised for the creative navigation of the municipal and regulatory requirements resolved prior to moving the project forward. Studio Twenty Seven Architecture values this acknowledgement of creative hands and minds working together with off-the-shelf construction materials to create such an eye-catching structure.

The Union Station Pavilions were praised for unique material selection and a fabrication process blending digital technologies and the hand-craft skills of traditional boat building artisans. The resulting pavilions are vibrant curiosities when discovered in the monotone landscape of a typical parking structure.

Thousands of hands participated in the design and construction of these buildings.
