Mid-Century Modern House recipient of 2020 Washingtonian|AIA DC Distinctive Residential Architecture award & 2019 AIA VA Honor Award for Excellence in Residential Architecture

Mid Century Modern House Studio Twenty Seven Architecture

This home, beautifully sited on a densely wooded hill, provides extraordinary privacy and seclusion. However, at less than 2000 SF, and with 2 children approaching teenage years, the clients needed more space.  Two pavilions were added – the placement of which was governed by sight lines and view sheds, and defines exterior spaces into outdoor rooms. Glass walkways connecting the pavilions touch the existing house as delicately as possible. The home has doubled in size but the ambiance of the site is preserved.

This project is a recipient of the 2020 Washingtonian Residential Design Award, https://www.aiadc.com/blog/2020-washingtonian-residential-design-award-winners as well as the 2019 AIA VA Honor Award for Excellence in Residential Architecture. Visit AIA VA here.

Juror comment: The mid-century modern aesthetic, simple volumes and details first drew the clients to the property and they did not want to lose these design features in the renovation. Equally important was preserving views from the living spaces to the exterior.
